How is the week going?
Can you tell us who you are and what you do?
I’m Enoabasi Nta. Creator of the blog ‘Uyai by Eno’, student and creative.
What are your thoughts about natural hair?
I think it’s stressful but totally worth it in the long run. Plus it’s another step to embracing ones heritage.
I went natural sometime in August 2015. I guess after years of having my scalp burned during a perm and having to battle with the wounds for about 2 weeks after, coupled with the fact my hair got ‘due’ very quickly, it seemed logical to leave the perm life and go natural.
Did you do a BC or you transitioned?
I did a big chop.
What was the experience like?
I remember going to a barber’s shop that was located close to where I was doing a summer job and asking the guy to lower my hair to an afro. He said N500 and I got into the chair. The clipper comes on and I hear the buzz right beside my ear. I was beginning to have second thoughts – wasn’t I sure I wanted to let go of my long beautiful hair to start again and then before I could make a move, the guy runs the clipper right in the middle of my hair and takes it lower than I ever wanted. Almost a skin cut. I remember it being too low to comb and only being able to use a brush.
I guess my biggest fear was that my hair would be one of the stubborn textures that refused to submit to hairdressers. Fortunately that’s not the case.
Do you have a regimen you stick to? What is it like?
Not exactly. All I do is use only natural/ organic products and stick to protective styles. And occasionally wear my hair out.
What emotional struggles, if any, have you faced since going natural?
The only times I remember getting emotional are when I have to get braids installed and when I had to make my very first trim post BC.
Do you think you are in it for the long haul or is it just a phase?
I’m definitely in it for the long haul. I foresee total body engulfment goals in my distant future.
There are people that definitely have negative comments about your hair, how do you deal with that?
I really ignore the negative comments as long as I’m doing what makes me happy. And the people who matter accept my hair and know it’s a part of me
What's your must have product and accessory?
My must have product is castor oil. You know those little bottles they sell in pharmacies for N450 I think. And my must have accessory is probably a shoelace/ string. They’re the key ingredient for a killer puff/ bun.
What is your go-to style?
I just braid/ hold back a side and tease the rest with my fingers till it frames my face just right.
What advice do you have for anyone just going natural?
Where can we find you? Your social media platforms…
