Real Life Natural Hair Talks: The loc'd image

Hi Naturalistas

Have you people noticed that it is usually people in the entertainment industry that loc their hair (ESP the guys)? I couldn't help noting this. Does it have to do with the fact that most of them are already people that are daring enough to follow what makes them happy?  I mean they are usually people that do not want to conform nor do they care about others think of them. They probably had to speak up and tell their parents that they will follow their own dreams and have gotten used to not having to bother about what people want of them. Or does it just have to do with the fact that they are self employed anyways? Let's face it, more often than not people have one or two opinionsabout  people with locs. Some employers will not even give them a chance to see if they can work the job just because of their hair.
I think people can even accept to overlook ladies with locs these days because they can be dismissed as braids and twists but with the guys it is a different story entirely. At least there is progress in the way people are now perceiving locs in the society which is quite different from what it used to be, but we still have a long way to go.
What is your opinion, why do you think people readily stereotype people with locs and what do you think of these stereotypes?

  1. As a brotha who rocks an afro, I can relate. It doesn't seem to have kept me from getting any work, but in the early stages of my hair growth, I was told quite often that it wasn't a professional look. These days, I rock my hair in such a confident fashion, that no one really gives me shit about it.

  2. People attach very negative stereotypes to locs. As if having locs means you're incapable of contributing to society. I wonder why that is. I mean, the world loved Bob Marley- probably the most famous loc head. One would expect that that's have made us more amenable to locs but noooo.

Stereotypes are silly. And personally, I love locs. I know I'm going to loc my hair at least once in my life, to see if I can handle the commitment because I do love wearing a plain round fro.

I once saw a lawyer with locs. I heard some judges don't let him appear in their courts though. I wish I had the chance to talk to him. It would have been very interesting to hear his story. He did look good in the black and white, with his locs packed to the back in a low ponytail.
